I was at an inspection recently where the homeowner literally had done most of the improvements to the home himself. It all looked good to my eye, but the inspector had a lot to say. I thought this would send the buyer running. Instead, the buyer asked for all the repairs to be done by licensed professionals or to reduce the purchase price by $10,000. I have to wonder if the seller had hired professionals to do the intial jobs, he probably could have gotten $10K more for his home vs. paying $10K to sell it. The bottom line is always think twice before getting into the do-it-yourself home improvement game. In some cases DIY jobs can decrease a home’s value.
